Envelope information in speech processing: acoustic-phonetic analysis vs. auditory figure-ground segregation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Long-term envelope modulations (< 100Hz) influence the identification of speech in noise. It is not clear, however, whether this influence only takes place at the level of acoustic-phonetic analysis (phonetic identification) or if envelope fluctuations may also help in auditory figureground segregation (e.g. separation of speech from concurrent backgrounds). An experiment is presented in which the influence of long-term envelope modulations was investigated using signals mixed with either stationary or temporally modulated noise. The better performance observed when processing speech in modulated background may be related to the listeners’ ability to use envelope information in trying to follow concurrent signals independently. It is therefore predicted that, if longterm envelope modulations help to segregate speech from noisy backgrounds, this effect should be stronger when envelope information is fully available.

Objective: This study was a basic investigation of the ability of concurrent speech segregation in hearing impaired children. Concurrent segregation is one of the fundamental components of auditory scene analysis and plays an important role in speech perception. In the present study, we compared auditory late responses or ALRs between hearing impaired and normal children. Materials & Methods...

We studied eight normal subjects in an fMRI experiment where they listened to natural speech sentences and to matched simple or complex speech envelope noises. Neither of the noises (simple or complex) were understood initially, but after the corresponding natural speech sentences had been heard, comprehension was close to perfect for the complex but still absent for the simple speech envelope ...

Background: This study assessed the relationship between working memory capacity and auditory stream segregation by using the concurrent minimum audible angle in children with a diagnosed auditory processing disorder (APD).Methods: The participants in this cross-sectional, comparative study were 20 typically developing children and 15 children with a diagnosed APD (age, 9–11 years) according to...
متن کاملBrain bases for auditory stimulus-driven figure-ground segregation.
Auditory figure-ground segregation, listeners' ability to selectively hear out a sound of interest from a background of competing sounds, is a fundamental aspect of scene analysis. In contrast to the disordered acoustic environment we experience during everyday listening, most studies of auditory segregation have used relatively simple, temporally regular signals. We developed a new figure-grou...
متن کاملNeural Correlates of Auditory Figure-Ground Segregation Based on Temporal Coherence
To make sense of natural acoustic environments, listeners must parse complex mixtures of sounds that vary in frequency, space, and time. Emerging work suggests that, in addition to the well-studied spectral cues for segregation, sensitivity to temporal coherence-the coincidence of sound elements in and across time-is also critical for the perceptual organization of acoustic scenes. Here, we exa...
